It's interesting that you should think I am trying to latch onto hype, and not what I think, but I will bite anyway.
The reason I gave this film a 7 is because I was honestly entertained by it. The story isn't the big surprise here, everyone knows what to expect - but the presentation was entertaining. At the risk of repeating one word too many times, I will always consider the primary responsibility of a mainstream, commercial film to be one thing, and one thing only - being entertaining.
As with most Indians, cricket is something I can hold a conversation about without being an avid fan of the sport anymore, and 83 made the match recreations fun even for me.
That's all there is to say about it, pretty much, I am sorry you did not enjoy the film.
Before we say anything about 83 as a movie, we need to talk about the actual World Cup of 1983, and how much it actually mattered. The Indian cricket team, having underachieved in both the previous editions of the newly formed Cricket World Cup in 1975 and 1979, instilled little faith in its supporters. And the heavyweights of the cricketing world - West Indies - had won both the previous editions of the World Cup without losing a single match, and were the favourites to win in 1983 as well.
The West Indies team had its formidable openers, Sir Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes....
