American Drive-In starts off with a young couple in a van heading for a drive-in. They pass this group of punks who see the beautiful girl in the van and give chase. They eventually muscle their way into the drive-in which is showing a movie called Hard Rock Zombies, a horrifying flick.
"American Drive-In" has too many characters playing alongside each other and is slightly confusing in the beginning and turns out right funny in the end. To understand this movie better, one must also understand the concept of the drive-in, which is purely American. Traditionally, a couple goes to a drive-in not to watch the movie, but to make out or make love in the back seat of the car.
The punks are spurned by the cute girl and now want to teach her a lesson by gang-raping her. But in true filmi style, her boyfriend comes and saves her, and gets beaten up in the bargain. While all this confusion continues, a city council man wants to catch the punks who are selling drugs to the teen crowd. He has hopes of becoming town mayor. He sends his adolescent son to do the dirty work and, as expected, botches up the whole plan. The councilman ends up getting himself caught on videotape, in a compromising situation with a local whore.
The acting is not bad, neither is the direction and screenplay. The only drawback of this movie is the plot, or the lack of it. The story is very weak, and does not hold your attention for very long. The movie portrays the youth as sex-starved and crass. The scenes turn repetitive and boring. Nothing can be said of the music score as well.
Overall, American Drive-In is a barely watchable movie. The only saving grace is the situational comedy brought on by the characters.
