Durga Shakti Review

"Love can move mountains and it is eternal. It can transcend all boundaries of reality and practicality. Never ever try to stop lovers from each other's arms or try to crush the love between them. Leave them alone, in their perfect romantic world, or face the consequences of your actions." Can the premise of a movie get any more mundane?

A story of love, revenge, rebirth and God, this is, supposedly, a Kannada horror movie, dubbed in Telugu to enlighten us on "The Power of Love", and how it can shatter barriers of time and all known laws of science.

In an idyllic village are two happy lovers, singing typical love songs and whispering sweet nothings, generally, totally in love. The evil Zamindar, Raja Raja Verma (Devraj), loves Chamanti, and in his selfish pursuit of her, he ends up killing both the lovers.

Chamanti turns into a wandering ghost seeking her vengeance. Raja Raja Verma is born again and, as fate would have it, reaches the village to meet his true love, Durga (Shruti). After all the superflous songs and attempted scares, Chamanti is killed with the help of our ever present, resident holy man (typically 'Indian').

The director has tried his hand at computer-enhanced special effects, and does a pretty good job of it, which, incidentally, is the only plus point of this otherwise grinding tale. The cast goes through the motions with no enthusiasm. The music is tolerable and the camerawork is good.
