Do directors specialize in filming a particular scene? Well, we guess they
do. And do novels influence storywriters? Of course, they do. Does a combination
of these churn out a hit? Well, it doesn't. Simply because the director has
to be a specialist in more than one scene. And the storywriter has to do more
than just be influenced by a novelist.
This is exactly what's happened to Evil Senses - a one-shot-wonder director,
and a novel-inspired scriptwriter. How else could a complicated plot - typical
James Hadley stuff - end in the scene that the director specializes at? And
how else could there be such a complicated plot in what should be a porn-flick?
Anyway, the film begins with Emmanuel getting a call from Phil. The caller
warns him to leave the city because he has a certain set of documents for which
there are people out there willing to kill him - who these guys are you'll never
know. So, Emmanuel memorizes the documents, which actually are a set of names,
and starts his preparations to leave the country. He chooses his passport -
he has several - which gives us the impression that this movie is a high espionage
drama.
Next, he calls for a cab, which he is told will arrive in ten minutes. He goes
outside his house and awaits the cab. The cab or, should we say, a cab arrives
within five minutes. Since it arrives five minutes earlier than it should've,
Emmanuelle smells a trap, walks up to the driver and blows his brains out -
this scene is the director's special, the one we told you about.
Next, he goes to hide at Nicole's (his friend) whorehouse - convenient since
this is a soft-porn flick. Here, he falls in love with Victoria - obviously,
a whore. From here, the movie starts getting complicated, especially since Victoria
is an agent planted in the brothel to get the documents from Emmanuel. And since
Emmanuel knows this, they end up playing games with each other - in and out
of love.
At this point, you start getting a headache and wonder as to why you
came for a flick with such a silly name. You want to go home, but you still
hope that the director has something more in store for you. Well folks, trust
me, there's nothing. And if you still wanna go for this flick, don't forget
that you were warned not to.
By the way, the film ends with Emmanuel blowing up Victoria's brains - guess
it was appropriate!
