This movie is a recycled version of a seventies German movie. I say 'recycled'
because of the numerous cuts and the shoddy editing, which makes comprehension
of the movie very tough... not that there is much to be comprehended anyway! The
story of the movie is like any other story supposed to have been shot in a communist
block country.
The protagonist of the movie is a woman who works in a supermarket. She is supposed
to be very desirable, but frankly, she looks like a tired housewife more than
anything else.
Everyone from the store cleaner to the head of the local militia
makes a pass at her. She in turn tries her best to act coquettish, but again
the jaded look and the lack of enthusiasm doesn't help the role much. She basically
ends up looking like a woman who was walking by and happened to get involved
in the movie.
The story revolves around her and her numerous wooers. Her basic aim seems to
be to get out of East Germany into the better Western part. But why she has
to entertain a local low-grade clerk for this escapes comprehension.
Finally,
she sees some sense as she focuses on the militia and happens to interest the
captain. He arranges for her escape, but, meanwhile, she falls in love with
a young officer who looks like her kid brother. So, the movie ends with a twist
that is so predictable that you can't do anything more than yawn when it is
sprung at you.
All said and done, this is one movie that shows everyone, ranging from the communists
and the capitalists to the director, in a very bad light indeed. The motive
behind the making of this movie is perhaps the biggest mystery of all!
