Temper is NTR Jr's big comeback - or so said the director and the producer. The director talked about how you would forget NTR Jr from his previous movies and will see a new NTR. RGV went ballistic a couple of nights ago and tweeted something on the lines of how Sr NTR could learn a few things about acting from Jr NTR. If it were not for this hype, the movie would've probably gone down better.

Temper, like many other cop movies in Tollywood, shows a super-corrupt cop - Daya (NTR Jr). Daya is transferred from Hyderabad to Vizag at the behest of Valther Vasu (Prakash Raj), a don who requests a minister to send a cop to the city who is, well, super-corrupt. Daya enters the city and continues his usual deplorable ways, and helps Vasu in any which way he can.

He also meets Saanvi (Kajal), an animal lover, and falls in love with her. One fine day, Saanvi is picked up by Vasu's gang due to a misunderstanding. This triggers a chain of events that ends with Daya changing his ways and becoming an honest police officer. The path the film takes, though, is slightly unconventional, and this is what saves Temper.

The basic story of Temper - an incident of extraordinary cruelty pricking at his conscience and reforming a corrupt officer - is not new. The treatment is also trite through the first half and a good bit of the second. But Puri Jagannath ensures that the story takes off midway through the second half, and manages to have you rooting for it thereon almost till the end. The pre-climax in the court and the stunning turn the story takes post that that makes the audiences jump out of their seats is a masterstroke that nearly makes up for the insipid first half. Nearly.

Performances-wise, the film belongs to NTR and Posani. From being the corrupt cop in the beginning to becoming the sincere cop who does not even care for his life, NTR acts wonderfully. His dances look slightly fresh, but it might be time for new choreographers. His diction remains an asset, and he carries off the new modulation pretty well. Posani gets a lengthy role, and his antics suit the character he's been given. Kajal has clearly realized that she's falling behind in the game - she's reduced on the weight front and upped the glamour quotient.

Anup Rubens gives some average tunes but the fact that there are only five songs which are quite short helps. The film could've been tighter without a few scenes in the first half. The production values are all good.

Temper is standard Tollywood police fare with one good twist that takes it a couple of notches up. Watch it for that twist and for Jr. NTR - keep your kids away, though.

I honestly do not understand the logic behind Ravi Kandala's ratings. He has a peculiar taste in movies - neither is he inclined towards the arty films, nor can he be considered a part of the mass audience. This movie receiving a 6.5 is bizarre to say the least, considering Raghuvaran B.Tech., one of the best movies in recent times, received only a 5.5. Even movies like Manam, Oohalu Gusagusalade, Drushyam and Doosukeltha, which were were entertaining to say the least, recieved 5s and 6s from him.

On the other hand, a movie like Govindudu Andari Vadele, which barely had a semblance of a plot, received a 7! On top of that, the movie was universally panned by almost everyone.

Coming back to my rant regarding this movie receiving a 6.5, this is hands down one of the worst movies that has come out in the last few years. There is no plot, the songs pop up at all the wrong places and the screenplay is plain abysmal. It is sad that actors like Jr. NTR keep hamming it up instead of realizing that subtlety is their forte. His performance in Adhurs being a case in point. This movie also has that manadatory NTR scene where he assumes a humble posture and keeps lapping up all the blame for no fault of his. Lesser we speak about the "twist" and the ensuing "climax", the better. People seem to be shouting at each other instead of acting throughout the movie.

On a side note, how on Earth did this movie receive a U/A when a fun and a relatively lighthearted movie like Pataas received an A?

To sum up, this is not the elusive hit NTR is looking for, Puri Jagannath's Pokiri was a fluke, and this movie is a big crapfest. Stay away if you value your money.

Also, the management at fullhyd.com, if you see this post, please bring back Deepa Garimella, her reviews are the best.

Jr NTR is a talented actor but it is a pith that he is type casted as a "mass hero"....His movies have a lot in common...him playing a super hero...mouthing massive dialogues never used by normal sane people...romancing the heroine and using her for songs and romance...beating up millions of goons...doing some pretty bad comedy and sentiment...that's all seen in his movies....

Beyond the one thing that the hero can beat up dozens of armed goons (and the whole concept of songs), audiences notice logical loopholes in movies, and Temper has a lot of them. And films that eventually turn hits do not have too many of those.

All scenes between Posani and NTR are unnatural - their conversations and their reactions to each other. There's too many dialogues where there should be just expressions. And that whole rant at the beach by NTR to Posani - just what was the point? There's maybe a bunch of intelligent lines in there, but they all add up to nothing. Criminals commit crimes for quick gratification - they are not seeking justification for their acts. If someone put that much thought into finding justification for his acts which are done basically seeking quick gratification, he would not turn a serious criminal in the first place. So, given that scenes between the duo form a large part of the screentime and the core of the movie, there's a problem there.

The romance track suffers from the same - unnatural and tame. It starts too simplistically, and basically doesn't exist.

And the whole courtroom scene (warning - possible spoilers for those who did not watch the film and intend to) - so you can accuse people of rape and murder by implicating yourself in the crime, and that is enough reason for your accusations against them to not need to be proven first via cross-examination? And a judge can bypass the IPC and due course of law - such as the whole appeals process - to hand out capital punishments to be executed in a day?

The audiences are thinking about all of this. And if your audiences are wondering too much about logical loopholes, then the movie will sink.

And if the film felt the need to sew up the loose ends when it got NTR to make up to Tanikella Bharani, then what about Vennela Kishore? The movie isn't going to pay specifically for this error since most of the audiences aren't thinking about that anyway, but it just goes to show that there isn't much thinking behind this.

And of course, the pet peeve for all of us - that whole thing about just why villians don't use guns to kill the hero when they are clearly capable of owning guns and actually have them, too. The biggest logical hole in all action-oriented movies.

Temper is a meandering movie for the most part. It's star power and lack of competition might carry it through, but if Puri Jagannath would put as much effort into the cohesiveness of his scripts as he does into the dialogues, things would turn better.
