It hurts to say this, but what Taare Zameen Par needed was a good director to make it a true masterpiece.

In story-telling, the ends do not justify the means. And when your story lasts 2½ hours, the means are the ends. Taare Zameen Par is a noble effort, messed up in narration. It's like being on a poorly-maintained amusement park roller coaster that suddenly slows down just when the ride is beginning to get exciting, reaches the first sharp curve slower and later than it should, plods along for a while from there, and then takes a short cut to make it to the end in time, skipping most of the promised track.

So what you went to see, you don't get to see - what you get to see, are just its beginning and its ending. This was supposed to be the tale of a gifted teacher who helps a dyslexic kid work with this world and possibly even excel at it. There is, unfortunately, too much description of the problem, and too little of the solution.

And that makes this one a triumph of show-off over substance - the sequences showcasing the child's disorder, if we may call it that, are admittedly well-written, but that appears the writers' comfort zone. So it plods on and on - Aamir Khan isn't even there in the first half, and the movie self-indulgently shows scenes upon scenes and songs upon songs of the child's life and his world-view. And when the real challenge, the resolution, presents itself, it's glossed over simplistically: the cure to dyslexia is being gentle and appreciative.

Indeed, that's it. Those of you who did not know this, please put your hands up, we want to see what you look like.

There's a chance we're being uncharitable - the film will certainly change the way a lot of parents who watch it bring up their children, it will increase sensitivity to the condition, and it might even result in increased enrolling in NGOs. However, this is still a feature film promising entertainment, a tale well told, and not a documentary. And that leaves the other 50% of the movie to contend with. For, you've gone seeking a payoff.

TZP deals with Ishaan Awasthi (Darsheel Safary), a kid with problems in working with alphabets and numbers, and struggling to live in a world that just thinks he's lazy, slow, idiot, duffer. When he's finally sent off to boarding school by his parents after his city school gives up on him, he's put through further torment by teachers there. All this takes the entire first half, and while for most adults watching it it provides memories of school life, it quite overstays its welcome.

A temporary art teacher, Ram Shankar Nikumbh (Aamir Khan), then lands at the school, and, himself dyslexic in his childhood, immediately empathizes with Ishaan's situation, and starts a process of trying to reinstill confidence in him and help him learn. Only, that's not as romantic in execution as it sounds.

For starters, Mr. Nikumbh cries at the kid's condition - and once too many times - and that affects your judgement of the film. Then, he puts too many fundas in a few sequences, which, in a movie that used subtlety right until then as the preferred mode of communication, juts out obliquely. And finally, the treatment of the condition, which you'd gone to the movie for, lasts less than 10 minutes, and has nothing innovative in it.

The film, of course, has a fairy tale ending, which, in tales of triumph over human adversity, usually helps gloss over several sins. And it's up to you to decide if that fairy-tale ending actually misses the point - so is the film finally about a gifted child who can win competitions? But unless you are seeking too much of reality, the ending is just what makes for a lifetime of hope.

TZP showcases several pieces of good writing in the first half's characterization of Ishaan. The songs are superbly written, rendered and shot. And the actors are almost all top-notch. Darsheel Safary delivers a performance that is almost certain to bag some top awards. Aamir Khan is, of course, Aamir Khan. Tisca Chopra and Vipin Sharma, as the troubled parents of the kid, put in moving efforts. The family and school scenes all stroke plenty of association or déjà vu, as the case might be with you.

Taare Zameen Par is still worth a watch for what it has - it'll certainly help you be a better parent. It's never too late for that ...hopefully.

I love the review and I feel no need to watch the movie. I have read the reviews on other news papers and on other news channels too. Surprisingly most of the reviewers had to say the same. So congratulations dearest reviewer, you have rightly analyzed TZP. Aamir's solo aim in life is to get an Oscar and all his films, i must say lack the soul.
You can clearly see his efforts directed to only one goal-- Oscar.
Aamir-one of the finest actors of India should try to make a film just for the sake of art-of-making-a-good film.
I really like the review and i expected nothing but a gutsy, don't-care-what-you-think kind of real review from fullhyd.
Keep up the good work.

On one hand the editor talks about - "the probability that a film will appeal to the average Hyderabadi." On the other s/he ignores the comments of all such average Hyderabadis saying that the movie is way better than what the review says. The editor claims to reflect what the masses feel, and then goes on to appreciate one comment which went against opinions of dozens of others. There were 16 comments that said the review could have been better, and 1 comment that says otherwise, which then is acknowledged by the editor who talks about catering to democratic opinions! Well done - we very clearly see how you're reflecting the probability of the film appealing to the average Hyderabadi. Or are you implying that those of us that have commented here are not even average?

What are all these guys crying about?? I am really really surprised...it's an intelligent, honest and gutsy review...in fact reviews of fullhyd of late have been top-notch(except for the three stars you blokes gave for the crap like Om Shanthi Om)...this is the only site where you get to see PROPER movie reviews written by PROPER movie reviewrs, period. And all these guys who cannot appreciate the review are probably the dyslexics themselves...poof....

This is a good review though heavily tempered in its tone so as to 'please' the majority contrary to some of the comments that it is gutsy. But i strongly object to the Editor's note that their reviews are meant to correlate to the appeal of the movie for the majority. What the hell is that? A movie review is an individual's perspective; he is allowed to write a review because you think his opinion is more qualitative than the rest and that he can comprehend the finer, deeper aspects of the filmmaking better than the 'crowd'. It's not some kind of 'guess game' where the reviewer is judged upon his skill to surmise how many days the movie is going to play or how much money it's likely to collect. That's rubbish. In that case you better call yourself a movie-punter rather than a movie-reviewer. For ex, James Berardinelli wrote a great review on Night Shyamalan's Sixth Sense a few years back. He crapped it, said it's a bad movie, a fake and called Night Shyamalan a sophomore director, though the 'Sixth Sense' was a huge world-wide hit. But in time, Night Shyamalan was, in fact, proved to be a dud and Berardinelli's judgment of Shyamalan and his movies, turned out to be true. That's what i call a great movie reviewing i.e. a movie reviewer is someone who can perceive the underlying mind-set of the film-maker; tell us what makes that particular director tick and of the 'intellectual soundness' of the filmmaker's ideas, despite the money or popularity he has gained at present or may gain in future. That way, movie reviewing is a form of catharsis where the reviewer help you to see what you cannot see and aides you to gather a viewpoint which you are incapable of acquiring on your own. Movie reviewing is basically aimed at making the 'crowd' more sophisticated, more aware and broader in their vision so that they can smell out the 'fakes' and 'emotional show-offs' like Taare Zameen Par and learn to applaud the much more complex nuances of filmmaking which may not be readily 'visible' and remain locked to the average movie-goer. Movie reviewing is a handy tool, one of the many means to nurture the intellecutally healthy audience apart from the good film-making itself. Hence, the Editor is not under any obligation to offer any explanation for his reviews nor he needs to curb his perspective so as to make his review 'acceptable'. Movie reviewing is not some democratic endeavor so that you write your reviews as per a general consensus. On the contrary, more individualistic and idiosyncratic a review is, the healthier you call it to be. It's an effort to expand an individual's distinct and intelligent artistic slant to others and it's up to others to respond or not to respond. Offering statistics, instances and explanations is not only absurd, it's actually intellectual cowardice, why? If you think the reviews are ought to please the 'majority opinion', then you may as well let anyone of the readers here write a review in future. So please remove that Editor's Note, it's actually an affront to the one's sense of intellectual freedom.

Duudes. The fact that you thought it was necessary to publish an "Editor's note" in order to defend yourself is proof enough that you felt guilty of publishing the dumb review written by some pseudo intellectual nincompoop. And the editor seems to be an even bigger fool publishing those statistics and thinks that there is only one aberration in it.So you say that Guru ran only for 5 weeks???? @Die Hard-5: Thank you for a well-articulated opinion. Our point is, we do not try to be film critics in the sense you have described them (which is perhaps quite accurate if the purpose is what you've said it should be). We aim to be a local entertainment guide, and the film reviews on fullhyd.com tell readers what films screening in town are likely to entertain the most, help them de-stress. We believe 90% of our readers want that - entertainment recommendations.

And no, it's not a 'guess-game' - if it were that, mathematically we'd be right only 50% times in the long run. For 3 years now, we believe we have averaged 80%-90% correlation between our Day 1 ratings and the number of people who watch a film (based on revenues / number of weeks the film eventually runs). Again, *that* is indeed what we try to do, that is the service we provide.

Your post has nevertheless been well-argued. We hope everyone who reaches this page looks at it.

The truth is people who want to read unnecessarily rosy reviews and eulogising the actor rather than the role, need to go elsewhere.

FullHyd reviews are frank and hit the mark. Calling a laddu a laddu.
[Read the review again after coming back from the movie and decide for yourself]

Reviewers, please keep up your excellent work.

"The film reviews on fullhyd.com tell readers what films screenig in town are likely to entertain the most, help them de-stress"
then how can u say this is a "review"?
Our oldies say "old movies are good" ofcourse those are(no issues..),but those may not entertain this generaton..,

and in fullhyd.com terms "what is the meaning of Entertainment"??

and ratings it self showing

**** - quite good
*** - good

so now tel me the meaning of GOOD..,

Ekkadunnaru baabu?

try to write reviews suitable for all 'coz u r using a powerful media , not for only some targted people,

by the way are we in forum??
which topic is "the entertained one vs good one"

Excellent movie, Absolutely Gorgeous, I dont agree with the reviewer's comments that more time should have been devoted on how the childs mental problem could have been solved. If such an attempt would have been made, I think the movie would have been dragged. And I dont agree with the negative comments on the reviewer as it is his initial opinion of the movie and may change after reading our reviews. Kindly remember he or she is also an human being and could make some mistakes. By the way this movie is a must watch for all genders, ages and professions.
