If you were to define Venus, what would you say - that it was a very hot heavenly
body? One can only hope to see a maximum of one of those in a Shakila flick -
and that will not be hers! The guy with the thick spectacles will tell you that
Venus is the Greek goddess of love; which would be the literal translation of
the title of the movie. Not that it makes any difference because the only reason
you will be thinking of a god or goddess while watching this is to pray for the
movie to end.
Prema (Shakila) and Priya are sisters who run a garments shop and a driving school. Vijay and Madan are neighbours and childhood friends. They want to go abroad so they need to get drivers' licences. Obviously they land at this particular school and the 'fun' begins - the usual stuff of 'accidental' falling over each other during the lesson etc. Madan starts dating Prema, and after sometime starts two-timing her with her sister. Meanwhile, Vijay is dating Madan's sister on the sly, while also fantasizing about Prema.
Predictably, just as Prema is falling for Madan totally, she listens in on a phone conversation between him and her sister. Oh yes, she also has some weird back pain which starts up every so often and her 'distress' is so great that even the audience starts groaning every time this happens. Anyway, the doctor tells her that it is some incurable disease and the usual melodrama follows. And before you know it, it's time to go. Oh forget about those million story sidetracks just left hanging - you should be used to this by now!
Practice makes perfect. At least, in A T Joy's case this has shown itself in the
form of better understanding on his part as to how to direct lovemaking scenes.
If you've seen any of his earlier movies, the lovemaking scenes look like the
guy is trying to verify a mathematical formula to count exactly how many hairs
the woman has on her. Joy seemed to think that some sweat and contortion of facial
muscles should do the job. All that seems to have changed - I think we can look
forward to more 'satisfying' movies from Shakila's biggest fan.
